All you need:

- old piece of wood (i found mine in a scrap pile while walking past a construction site)...to make sure your sign isn't too heavy, stick with a thin (1-inch) piece as maximum thickness

- two colors of paint (spray paint is easiest for the stenciling)

- nails (length depends on what wood you use...for my 1x4 wood, I used 30mm nails)

- hand/jigsaw & hammer

- wood glue

1. Create stencils for letters: decide on your text and font and print out, pasting

pages together to make sure words are straight. Cut out the letters with an Exacto knife.

2. Cut up your wood according to the length of your text. I liked the staggered look and lined up my words to the right. I have also seen signs with vertical boards and horizontal writing.

3. Simply use two pieces of wood to reinforce from behind and hold your boards together in the order you'd like. For smaller signs, you only need strong wood glue to hold the pieces together.

3. Paint your boards with primary colour and allow to dry completely before taping on your stencil and painting the letters with the secondary colour. Touch up writing with small paintbrush after removing stencils.

4. To mount: insert two half-inch screws a few inches apart on the back of the sign, leaving them partially exposed to allow wire or strong string to be tied in a circle around them, creating a hanger.

For a more polished look: sand down the wood, fill holes, and apply multiple coats of paint.
